Chapter 7

Brysen

Elisa covered her shock like a pro, but her eyes were a little wild as she looked from me, to the ring, to Zach, and back.

“Um, yes. I was...” she trailed off, apparently at a loss for words. I gave the little devil inside my head a mental fist bump. I might have specifically pulled the ring out in this situation because she couldn’t protest. Fuck, that’s exactly why I did it.

“And while we’re at it, let’s clear up one more thing,” I grinned smugly at the dipshit across from me, who, by the looks of it, was about to lose his dinner. “Your knowledge of Elisa in any intimate capacity is sorely lacking and since I don’t share, it’s going to fucking stay that way. But rest assured, I’ll never have need of looking elsewhere for passion. Elisa is all one man could ever hope for.”

I stood and helped Elisa up, twining my fingers with the ones on her left hand. I lifted it to my lips and whispered a kiss across the soft skin and then on the twinkling diamond perched there. What’s-his-name and his date weren’t worth another glance, so I guided my woman out of the restaurant, intent on making it to our room before she freaked out.

She was silent all the way up and I was growing more concerned by the second, worried she was building toward an epic explosion. Not too worried, though. My powers of persuasion seemed to work with her and while giving her the ring at dinner had been a spur of the moment decision, I’d already prepared for a night of seduction.

We entered the room and Elisa silently wandered to the wall of windows, wrapping her arms around herself as she admired the view. I followed cautiously, unable to read her emotions.

“Baby?” I asked softly. “Where’s your head at?”

She turned and I was stunned to see sadness in her eyes.

“Thank you,” she murmured with a small smile.

“For what?” I was confused and didn’t want to make assumptions.

“For being my contingency plan,” she held up the hand with the ring, “and having one of your own. You didn’t have to go so far as to pretend to be my fiancé. It was incredibly sweet of you though, and I really appreciate it.”

I was speechless. She thought this was a ploy? What the fuck? I don’t care who I’m helping or what I’m supposed to be doing, I would never give a ring to a woman unless it was meant to be on her finger forever.

I calmed myself down by admitting we hadn’t known each other long enough for her to come to that conclusion herself.

“It wasn’t a backup plan, Elisa. That ring was meant for you.” Other words eluded me, so I decided to show her how serious I was about keeping her.

I palmed each side of her face and laid my lips gently over hers. I took my time, exploring her mouth, making love to her with my kiss. A little sigh floated from her, starting a tingle up my spine.
